Extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT) is a relatively new treatment for lower limb pain, but this has been used for many years in the treatment of kidney stones. There is growing evidence showing how effective it can be especially in conditions like plantar fasciitis or Achilles tendinopathy.
ESWT uses shockwaves to help restart the healing process, by trying to increase blood flow to the injured area. The treatment is non-invasive and is usually relatively pain-free.
There are usually three treatments back to back on a weekly basis, then a follow-up 6 weeks later, at this stage we should notice a improvement symptoms.
ESWT is usually covered by your insurance company, however it is always advisable to check first.
